From the Principal

Beef Week 2021 provided a wonderful co-curricular and curriculum opportunities for a large number of students particularly in Science, Agriculture and Hospitality. We are fortunate to be located next to this important event which provides Rockhampton SHS with access and income.

The school’s revenue for the hire of facilities is around $130 000, which will be put back into infrastructure this year. One important project under consideration is the insulation of the school’s $1.2m Sports Centre (completed in 2016 as a joint project of school-obtained government funding and contributions of the P&C).

Parents, students and staff are to be commended for their management of the inevitable disruptions to parking, pick up and drop offs and facilities use.

We are currently undertaking a review of Beef Week operations in consultation with Beef 2024. Parents and guardians are welcome to email feedback to krump3@eq.edu.au by 21 May 2021.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Many thanks to the numerous parents and guardians attending this in the hall on 12 May. Letters of commendation will be posted to parents and students shortly. Well done to the large number of students who are performing well, not only in achievement but in effort and behaviour!

Aquaculture Project Brief

The school continues to undertake planning for our $2.5m centre. The brief has been approved and will be overseen by the Department of Education. This exciting project was announced by the state government in 2020. The facility will be located next to our Sports Centre.

School Fence

During term 3 the school will receive a $700 000 fence around the perimeter. The purpose of the fence is to ensure student safety and costs will be borne by the DoE.

Student Card

Next term we plan to issue students with multiple copies of a laminated Student Card (as well as their ID card). These cards have student photos and barcode to facilitate transactions in the library, Student Services and at the amenities office. Students will shortly receive information regarding these additional cards.

School jumpers and jackets

Parents are reminded that the uniform shop is open on Tuesday and Thursday mornings 8:15 -9:15. Students may also wear a plain navy jumper (no hoodie).

Best wishes for the remainder of semester 1!

Regards

Kirsten Dwyer

FOCUS ON THE FUTURE

Rockhampton State High School students from Years 10, 11 and 12 visited the Capricorn Careers Expo held at CQUniversity on 13 May 2021.

This year’s Careers Expo gave students an excellent opportunity to talk to representatives from universities, registered training organisations, private colleges, apprenticeship organisations and employers. Demonstrations by the emergency services allowed students have a closer look at work in this field.

This is a once a year opportunity for our students to engage with all universities in the state and it was wonderful to see so many of our students engaging with exhibitors, asking questions and accessing useful resources. Many exhibitors commented on the excellent behaviour, good manners and fantastic presentation of our students as well as the genuine interest they demonstrated.

The Career Expo is an annual event and students in the senior phase of learning in 2022 are encouraged to participate next year. For more information on career pathways, contact the staff in the FEET First program.

Beef Week

Beef week enabled our students to showcase their skills and understanding in cattle showing and judging while enjoying the many opportunities Beef Week brought to the region. Given the current landscape, this was the first major event for 2021 for our Show Cattle team. Their results were outstanding with a 4th and 5th placing in the 500-559kg steer class. Maddison Rose, Kirralee Abel and Megan Mitchell were excellent in parading their steers around the show ring.

During the schools’ team judging, our team of Maddison Rose, Kirralee Abel, Macey Verrall and Megan Mitchell made it through the first round of preliminary judging and had the opportunity to outline and justify their judgements to the Over Judge in front of the large crowd.

Other Show Cattle team members, who assisted during the week in preparing and caring for our cattle were Erin Clayton and Nikiata Olzard. The team should be proud of their work as it was a great week for our students representing the school in a professional manner, gaining valuable experience on such a large stage, and demonstrating the benefits students can gain by attending school in a rural area. Many thanks to all the parents and families who came out and supported our students.

Further thanks for the time and preparation our Show Cattle staff gave while working tirelessly to make sure everything was organised for Beef Week. Our Show Cattle team and staff are now preparing to compete in the regional show circuit with various shows over the next few months.

Students on Track to Civil Construction

A group of Year 11 and 12 students have commenced training in Certificate II in Resource and Infrastructure through SDS Training. This training will provide the students the opportunity to acquire skills for a career in the resources and infrastructure sector including construction, civil construction, drilling and mining.

During the first week of training, the students completed the working at heights unit which involved simulated heights work using a full body harness.

We would encourage any students that are interested in this course in 2022 to contact Ellinah Wheeler in the FEET First program office.

Year 12 Essential Maths Common Internal Assessment (CIA)

The year 12 Essential Maths students will sit their CIA on Friday the 4th June in the Hall. The students have been preparing for this assessment in their classes using sample papers from 2020. All Essential Maths students will also be doing a ‘Mock CIA’ on Friday 21st May in the Hall in preparation for this important event

It is important for students to be in regular attendance in their Maths class and also to have their own calculator for the upcoming exams.

Any student who is absent on the day of the CIA (4th June) will need provide evidence to the Senior Schooling HOD and complete an AARA application as per QCAA policy.

Does your student have a calculator for Maths?

Having your own scientific calculator is essential in maths subjects. The advantage of having your own calculator is that you learn how to operate that particular brand and become more confident to be able to complete set tasks both in class and for homework.

The recommended style is the TI-30XB (pictured) which is available at the cash collection window for $22.90.

Food Technologies & Hospitality news – Beef Week experiences

Beef Week provided numerous opportunities for our staff and students to gain greater insight into the Hospitality industry. A huge thank you to our wonderful staff, Mrs Lane, Mrs Conway and Mrs Johnson for organising and coordinating each experience.

Celebrity Chef cooking demonstrations

Yr 10 Food Technologies & Yr 11 Hospitality students attended separate sessions at Beef Week, both focusing on technical skills and utilising a variety of produce to create dishes. Analiese Gregory & ‘Fast Ed’ Halmagyi demonstrated slow cooking techniques with ribs, as well as fermenting produce and Korean flavours with Year 10 students. Dominique Rizzo & ‘Fast Ed’ Halmagyi discussed ‘nose to tail’ cooking (an on-trend and sustainable cooking practice) and the use of Rockhampton local and native produce with Year 11 students. Students observed preparation of Wagyu were invited to touch a cow tongue and were able to sample native ingredients utilised.

Mystery Box Challenge with John Alexander

Year 11 and 12 Cert. ll Hospitality students were involved in an enriching learning experience delivered by Hog’s Corporate Executive Chef John Alexander. John is also the Executive Chef for the Wagyu Branded Beef Competition and an ex-student of RSHS. John first visited our school during Beef Week 2018, and contacted us again this year to return and work with our students.

We are grateful John has given willingly of his time, knowledge and expertise to the Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students. This is particularly as John was involved in the preparation and service of 1900 lunch meals at Beef the day before and a further 315 the following evening. Students were taken through knife skills with John followed by the Mystery Box Challenge; a task where students were given access to a wide range of fresh foods, pantry ingredients, speciality sauces, spices and marinades to create a dish. RSHS would like to not only thank John for organising many of the products used but also to Masterfoods/Mars company for the supply of these products at no cost to our school.

HPE and Sport

The conclusion of term 1 saw our keenly contested Interhouse Cross Country event produce some great individual performances. The full school event that was run alongside some AFL Queensland led development sessions provided a perfect opportunity for students to display their athletic ability over distance events, with the u12 and 13 competitors racing over 3km; 14’s, 15’s and open ladies running 4km, and the 16 years and open boys battling it out over 6km. Students who attended on the day were engaged by the Cross-Country events, the AFL activities and the highly entertaining Mr Kilpatrick on the microphone. The Champion House result came down to the wire, with a few minor placings and participation numbers proving the difference. A massive congratulations must go our Champion House for 2021 – Armstrong Sharks! An honorable mention also to our runners up the laver Crocodiles who were 13 points behind... We look forward to our Track and Field carnival to be held during the last week of term 2.

Term 2 Sport update

This term is a busy one for our athletes with boys basketball, netball, and girls rugby league all currently underway. This year for the first time there are 4 boys basketball teams in competition, the most interest we’ve ever had which is exciting for the development of this sport. Our girls netball teams have had mixed results with some good wins and close losses recorded. Congratulations to our 7C and 9C teams who are currently undefeated! Our girls on the footy field continue to improve each week and build on their skills through some great gameplay.

As always students are reminded to keep an ear out on notices for game times and information for their relevant sport and for sporting events that come up in the future.
