FOLLOW UP CONTACTS/SUPPORT
FEET First follow up
The FEET First team will contact year 12 school leavers early in 2022 to find out their post-school pathway and to offer support to achieve their post-school goals. Students should tell them whether they are in further education, employment or training. They are encouraged to ask for help if they have not located further work, training or university.
Next Step Survey
A member of the Queensland Government will contact year 12 school leavers regarding the Next Step survey. The Next Step post-school destination surveys identify the study, work or other point-in-time destinations of school leavers in Queensland. The Next Step survey provide valuable information to improve the services available to school leavers in the future. The surveys collect information about what school leavers are doing in the year after leaving school. Students who complete Year 12 in 2021 will complete the “Year 12 Completers Survey”.
On behalf of the FEET First team, we would like to wish our year 12 school leavers all the best for their future endeavours.
Please stay in touch if you need assistance.

Student finds employment through the Work Inspiration Program
A group of Year 11 students recently completed “Work Inspiration”, an initiative coordinated by The Smith Family. Work Inspiration is two-day structured work program that provides students with knowledge of job roles and career pathways and what goes on behind the scenes of a large organisation. They participated in employer-led activities to develop their teamwork skills and to reflect on their personality types. On the first day, the students worked with staff from the Rockhampton Regional Council and Officeworks.
One of our students was fortunate to secure casual employment with Officeworks through follow up networking with the recruitment staff.
“For me, the Work Inspiration program with The Smith Family was an incredible help in finding my passion to work for Officeworks. Work Inspiration opened my eyes up to a variety of career pathways which helped me a lot. I’m so glad I found Officeworks through the Work Inspiration program because I was searching for a casual job but I didn’t have much of a passion for anything other than nursing and medical science. When I attended the Work Inspiration program at Officeworks I was interested straight away. I’m very grateful for The Smith Family for giving me this chance!” Arabela Bugna – Year 11 student.
Rockhampton State High School would like to thank Paul Mitchell from The Smith Family for coordinating the program and for the staff from the Rockhampton Regional Council, Officeworks and AECOM for giving up their valuable time for our students.

Legal Studies News
Legal Studies students learn the parliamentary process
In Term 4, students from the Year 10 and 11 Legal Studies classes worked with a member of the Parliamentary Education Team to strengthen their understanding of the Queensland legislative process. The visit consisted of a presentation on the formation of parliament following an election as well as a role play. The students assumed the roles of various Members of Parliament and parliamentary officers such as the Sergeant-at-Arms and the Clerk of the Parliament. A replica of the Mace was used to symbolise the authority of the house and the Speaker of the House.
During the role play, a group of students formed the government and introduced a bill to the chamber which would see the school hours change to 8am – 5.30pm. Both sides of parliament debated the bill following the usual legislative process with the majority government successfully passing the bill.
The presenter, Katie Harmer, described them as the most engaging group she had ever worked with. The students will extend on their knowledge of parliamentary processes in Legal Studies in 2022.
Students broaden their knowledge of the law
A group of Legal Studies students visited the courthouse during their first week of the school holidays to broaden their knowledge of the law.
During their tour of the courts, they spoke with representatives from Queensland Corrective Services and Legal Aid – Domestic and Family Violence. They learnt about the various roles within Queensland Corrective Services and the careers pathways to these roles. Louise Hayes from Legal Aid Queensland explained her role as advocate in the domestic violence court. The students will build on this knowledge in Units 3 and 4.
