From the Principal

2017 has been an amazing year of achievements, all of which will be outlined in the School Annual Report published on our webiste early in 2018. Preliminary Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and OP data looks excellent; great work to our fabulous year 12s and their hard-working teachers.

Farewell to our departing staff Rebecca Bray, Larren Bean, Samantha Hogan, Natalie Stubbs, Cindy McLaughlin, Sara Hicks and Emma McInnes; We wish them all the best in their new positions. We will have a ceremony, to thank them for their contribution to this great school.

Our Centenary Committee is making great progress towards celebrations that are only 18 months away. We will be gearing up next year for a lot of events mid-2019. Thank you to all our hard-working committee members. We have established a crowd funding site to help raise funds from sponsors for our Centenary Projects, please see the link below for more information. Please note that all donations will be recorded and those over $2.00 are tax deductible.

During the holidays, extensive infrastructure work will commence. These improvements amounting to $1.2 m will greatly enhance staff and student facilities. All works are scheduled to be completed by the end of April.

I would like to take the opportunity to wish all members of our school community a safe, happy, restful and fun end of year break!

Training & Skills for Careers in Health Industry

Congratulations to Year 12 student Bonnie McAliney who graduated last week from the AllevE8 Program. The graduation morning tea was attended by students, parents, host work experience providers and SDS Training. Director of Training, Peter McDuff and his team from the Department of Training and Skills also attended.

As part of the AllevE8 Program, Bonnie completed Certificate II Health Support Services with SDS Training in conjunction with the Department of Education and Training. Her practical placement was at Benevolent Aged Care.

This program is aimed at students who are looking to build a career in the health industry and gives them a unique opportunity to put their knowledge into practical use in a real life situation, whilst building their employability skills and networks with potential employers. Host employers are available in a range of settings including hospital, aged care, community services, pharmacy and disability care.

The AllevE8 Program will be running again in 2018 for current Year 11 students. Students, carers and parents are invited to attend an AllevE8 Information and Interview Session on Monday the 20 November 2017 from 2:00pm – 5:00pm at the North Street Annex Hall, North Street, Wandal. Please contact Samantha Sinclair, FEET First Program Coordinator, on 07 49 204 323 or ssinc51@eq.edu.au for more information. Kate Ingram from the Department of Education and Training can also provide information at kate.ingram@det.qld.gov.au or on 07 49 324 059.

Senior Students Connect with CQU

Rockhampton State High School senior students participated in the CQU Connect program in 2017. This program is part of the 'Widening Participation' initiative aimed at equipping school students with the desire and skills to transition to university. CQU Connect is about 'seeding success'; motivating and inspiring students to be successful learners at school and later at University, TAFE and in the workforce. The program targets Year 11 and 12 students and consists of interactive modules, which aim to build confidence and motivate all students to work to their full potential.

Our Year 11 OP eligible students recently completed the program at the CQUniversity’s North Rockhampton campus. The program was delivered by past and current CQUniversity students. While on the campus, students visited several of the teaching faculties and learned from university staff and students about the Start Uni Now (SUN) Program, scholarships available to prospective students to assist with the costs of university and an insight into university study. This program will run again in 2018.

QParents

Parents of 2017 Year 7s please note!

I am pleased to remind you that our school will be providing parents with access to a new, convenient, online parent portal called QParents.

The QParents web and mobile application provides an easier way for you to interact with our school. Parents will have secure, online access to their child’s student information, anytime, anywhere, through a smartphone, tablet or computer.

QParents allows parents to connect instantly with our school to access and manage their child’s student information, including:

  • Attendance and absence details, as well as the ability to notify the school of an absence
  • Academic report cards
  • Class timetables
  • Viewing unpaid invoice details, payment history, and making payments online
  • Viewing and updating personal student details, including medical conditions and address
  • Enrolment details

QParents will assist both staff and parents in sharing and responding to information in an efficient and effective way.

It won’t replace the traditional ways you communicate with our school, but it will provide another way to communicate with us!

What do you need to do to get started?

There is an attachment to this email inviting one parent or guardian for each student to become a QParents Account Owner (QPAO). The QPAO will be able to register for QParents to access and manage the student’s information online. A student’s QPAO will be able to view the student’s information and submit requests to update some of the student’s details. Please fill this letter out and return this via email or in person as soon as possible.

The QPAO will also be able to invite other people (such as another parent or family member), to view the student’s information. Once invited, these people can register for QParents as “delegated viewers”. A delegated viewer can see the student’s details, but cannot make updates. Your student maybe a `delegated viewer’, allowing them to access important information such as their timetables, attendance and report cards.

When you receive your invitation email or letter, simply follow the instructions to register your QParents account. The process should take less than 10 minutes to complete. Invitations sent by email will only ever come from no.reply@qparents.qld.edu.au. You will not be invited to register from any other email address or organisation.

If you do not want to register you can just ignore the invitation and your child’s student information will not be available to anyone through QParents.

Identity Verification

When registering as a QPAO, you will need to verify 100 points of identity documents online. The 100 points can be made up of documents in the following list:

Australian Passport

50 pts

Australian Marriage Certificate

40 pts

Australian Driver Licence

50 pts

Australian Citizenship Certificate

40 pts

Australian Birth Certificate

50 pts

Change of Name Certificate

40 pts

If you only have 40 points of the above ID documents you can still register for QParents, but you will need to attend the school for an additional check after you have registered online. Please bring the documents to schools to be sighted at the front counter at any time

Will my child’s information be secure?

Yes. QParents is a secure portal that meets strict industry standards. Only people with the right to access information about their child will be given an account; no one else.

If you don’t want to register for QParents, your account will not be created and your child’s information will not be made available through QParents.

Please email Rockhampton State High School at Principal@rockhampshs.eq.edu.au or phone on 49 204 333 and let us know if you do not want to register for QParents.
